How it all began

Bristol Voices Community Choir originated in a Workers Education Association singing class for women. When the classes finished in 1997 the steering group of Sally Lewis, Chris Gaine and Liza Parkinson applied to The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for a grant to continue and expand to form a community choir in St. Werburghs.

Their application was successful and they were awarded £3,500 to book halls and hire choir leaders and in January 1999 Bristol Voices Community Choir was born. In the spring of 2000 the choir performed at the very first Bristol Community Choir Convention at St Georges, Brandon Hill, an event which the current choir continues to support.

Bristol Voices grows up

That small choir has metamorphosed into a great big happy, noisy one, with around 80 members taking the Voices' funky global harmonies to the streets, halls and community fairs of Bristol. We've had a number of musical directors who have always worked closely with the choir to find out exactly what the members want.

Bristol Voices has always been grounded in the belief that anyone can sing, and that singing is one of the best, most fun things you can do in a group of people.  We love to sing, whether it's purely for our own pleasure, or performing at charity events or at our own concerts.
